Sorong, Papua – 9 October 2024 – doctorSHARE, in collaboration with PT Bayan Resources Tbk through Bayan Peduli program, is excited to inaugurate Indonesia’s first Blood Bank Hospital (BDRS) facility operating on board the Nusa Waluya II Floating Hospital.

Nusa Waluya II Floating Hospital is the first private barge hospital in Indonesia. The vessel is designed to provide long-term healthcare services ranging from primary care to advanced medical services. With facilities equivalent to a type C hospital on land, RSA Nusa Waluya II has served thousands of patients since it began operations in 2018. In 2024 alone, 437 minor surgeries, 375 major surgeries, 13 normal deliveries and 20 caesarean deliveries were performed on the ship.

Despite operating for more than 6 years, one of the biggest challenges in providing health services in remote areas is the availability of safe and sufficient blood. Currently, Indonesia is still short of blood bags, because according to WHO, the minimum blood requirement in Indonesia should be 2% of the population or approximately 5.6 million bags per year 2023. In fact, as of August 2024, there are only 91,000 bags available for the public to access and the majority of them are located in urban areas. Moreover, based on data from the Indonesian Health Survey in 2023, the prevalence of anemia among pregnant women in rural areas was 31.3% higher than in urban areas at 25.5%. This shortage is a big challenge for vulnerable communities in rural and remote areas, including pregnant women with anemia who are more at risk of complications or death during childbirth due to lack of blood.

The Blood Bank facility at RSA Nusa Waluya II, which is integrated with the medical laboratory, occupies an area of 11.7 x 2.2 meters and is capable of storing up to 60 blood bags. This capacity allows the ship’s hospital to support treatment for up to 30 patients, especially for those who require blood transfusions for surgery or childbirth.

“This is a big step for us,” said Tutuk Nuradhy Utomo, Managing Director of doctorSHARE. ”With this Blood Bank, we are able to provide life-saving medical treatment and ensure that patients in remote areas have access to quality healthcare services equivalent to those in urban areas.”

The facility is fully supported by PT Bayan Resources Tbk through the Bayan Peduli program, which is committed to improving access to healthcare in Indonesia, providing life-saving treatments.

Collaboration between the private sector, government, and non-profit organizations in making meaningful contributions to the improvement of community welfare and hope that the existence of this Blood Bank facility will help improve the medical services needed said Merlin, Director of PT Bayan Resources Tbk.

The launch of this Blood Bank facility marks an important milestone in doctorSHARE’s efforts to bring better healthcare services to remote parts of Indonesia. With more innovative programs like this, it is hoped that the challenges of providing quality Healthcare services in remote areas can be overcome, and the mortality rate due to blood shortages can be reduced.
