Tuberculosis Program

Tuberculosis Program in Papua, launched 2019, is a long-term program aimed to reduce the prevalence of Tuberculosis in Papua through methods of identifying suspect, detection, refer and seek treatment for Tuberculosis cases. Tuberculosis Program aims to reduce prevalence of Tuberculosis through awareness, early detection and complete treatment of Tuberculosis suspects and community empowerment to become Pendamping Minum Obat (PMO) also serves as general clinic.

This program strives to encourage a network between local stakeholders and health services. Tuberculosis Program operates a piloting clinic in Sentani area to provide access to health service, information and detection center, and also a treatment hub – servicing regular medical services for the community in Sentani area.

Main Issue

Based on WHO Report (2018), Tuberculosis is one of the top 10 causes of death and the leading cause from a single infectious agent (above HIV/AIDS). In 2017, Tuberculosis caused an estimated 1.3 million deaths among HIV-negative people and there were an additional 300.000 deaths from Tuberculosis among HIV positive people. Globally, estimated 10.0 million people developed Tuberculosis disease in 2017 in which 5.8 million is men, 3.2 million women and 1 million children. Two of third were in eight countries including Indonesia (8%).

In Indonesia, over 420.000 cases has been reported to Ministry of Health in 2017; in the meantime, WHO estimated over 1.020.000 cases occurred. Diagnosis and successful treatment of people with Tuberculosis has been increased every years and averts millions of deaths each year, but there are still large and persistent gaps in detection and treatment.

Solutions

doctorSHARE as a non-profit organization focusing on medical healthcare services and humanitarian aid responds to this issue by implementing Tuberculosis Program in Papua since March 2019. This is long term program aimed to reduce the prevalence of Tuberculosis in Papua through methods of identifying suspect, detection, refer and seek treatment for Tuberculosis cases (Management of Multi Drug Resistance – MDR).

This program encourages network between local stakeholders and health services. doctorSHARE Tuberculosis Program in Papua operates a piloting clinic in Sentani Area to provide access to health service, information and detection center, and treatment hub. This clinic also serves regular medical services for community in Sentani.
